Astrological Aspects

Aspects are the angles formed between planets in your birth chart. They describe how different parts of your personality communicate — through harmony, tension, or something in between.

Major Aspects

The five Ptolemaic aspects — the foundation of chart interpretation.

Conjunction

· Intensifying

A conjunction occurs when two planets occupy the same degree of the zodiac. This is the most powerful aspect — it fuses the energies of both planets into a single force. Depending on the planets involved, a conjunction can be harmonious or challenging, but it always amplifies. For example, Sun conjunct Moon creates a unified sense of identity and emotion, while Mars conjunct Saturn can produce disciplined drive or frustrating restriction.

In Starzy: Starzy highlights conjunctions in your natal chart to show where your energy is most concentrated, and in synastry to reveal where two people share an intense, magnetic connection.

Opposition

180° · Polarizing

An opposition places two planets directly across the zodiac from each other. This aspect creates a tug-of-war between two competing drives, but also the potential for balance and awareness. Oppositions often manifest through relationships — you may attract people who embody the qualities of the opposing planet. Venus opposite Pluto, for instance, can produce deeply transformative but intense romantic experiences.

In Starzy: Starzy interprets oppositions as growth points — areas where learning to balance two sides of yourself (or two people in synastry) leads to greater wholeness.

Trine

120° · Harmonious

A trine connects planets that share the same element (fire, earth, air, or water), creating a natural flow of energy. Trines represent innate talents and areas of ease — things that come to you without much effort. Moon trine Venus, for example, gives a natural warmth and emotional grace. The challenge with trines is that their gifts can go unnoticed or undeveloped precisely because they feel so effortless.

In Starzy: Starzy identifies trines in your chart to reveal your natural strengths and in compatibility readings to show where two people effortlessly understand each other.

Square

90° · Challenging

A square creates friction between two planets, producing tension that demands action. Squares are often associated with obstacles, but they are also the primary engine of growth in a birth chart. Without squares, there would be little motivation to change. Mercury square Neptune might cause confusion between logic and intuition, but working through it builds exceptional creative and perceptive abilities over time.

In Starzy: Starzy frames squares as catalysts for personal development. In synastry, squares show where two people push each other to grow — sometimes uncomfortably, but meaningfully.

Sextile

60° · Opportunistic

A sextile links planets in compatible elements (fire–air or earth–water), creating gentle opportunities rather than automatic gifts. Unlike trines, sextiles require conscious effort to activate — they present open doors, but you have to walk through them. Jupiter sextile Mercury, for instance, offers chances for intellectual growth and fortunate communication, provided you pursue them.

In Starzy: Starzy points out sextiles as areas of untapped potential in your natal chart and as points of easy cooperation in synastry reports.

Minor Aspects

Subtler influences that add nuance and depth to your chart.

Quincunx (Inconjunct)

150°

The quincunx connects signs that share nothing in common — different element, different modality, different polarity. This creates a persistent sense of awkwardness or misalignment between two areas of life. Adjustments are needed but never feel quite complete. It's the aspect of ongoing calibration — like trying to reconcile two languages that don't translate directly.

Semi-Sextile

30°

The semi-sextile links adjacent signs, which have very different qualities despite being neighbors. This aspect creates a subtle, background awareness — a quiet nudge to integrate two parts of yourself that don't naturally relate. It's mild but persistent, like a reminder you keep noticing out of the corner of your eye.

Semi-Square

45°

A minor tension aspect, the semi-square acts like a softer version of the square. It produces irritation and inner restlessness that push you toward small but meaningful changes. It's often felt as low-level frustration that builds until you address the underlying issue.

Sesquiquadrate

135°

Similar to the semi-square but operating at a wider angle, the sesquiquadrate creates agitation that often plays out externally — through conflicts with others or environmental friction. It pushes for adjustment and refinement in how you express the planets involved.

Quintile

72°

The quintile is associated with creativity, talent, and unique gifts. It connects planets in a way that produces original thinking and artistic ability. Quintiles often show where you can do something in a way nobody else does — your creative signature.
